How Pen Came About

Once paper was invented by the Chinese, the art of writing has greatly improved. Ancient Egyptians made use of a pen which was a hollow reed. This hollow reed was filled with ink that ran down to a point.

Similar invention was actually seen in China – they made use of feathers as pens. These pens were dipped in ink and were called “Quill Pens”. These pens were widely used until the development of steel nib in 1800.

In the late 1800s, a new kind of pen was developed – this is known as the “fountain pen”. It was invented in France and was likewise known as an endless pen. The pen depends on the principle of capillary action to pull the ink.

During the World War II, Lazlo Biro, a Hungarian invented another pen which do not leak at high altitudes. It actually became quite popular and was called as the “Ballpoint Pen”.

Indeed, the ancient people used ink to write but this ink was made of bark, linseed oil, soot, and berries. Nowadays, inks were already from synthetic chemicals.
