In 1960’s, the technology behind the Internet began at MIT. “LOG”
was the first message ever to have been transmitted. Do you know why? The user
tried to type LOGIN; however, the network crashed after the massive load of
data of the letter G.

First Emoticon
The first emoticon was -). It was credited to Kevin Mackenzie
in 1979. After 3 years, Scott Fahlman proposed to make it :-). Since then, it
became the norm.
First Webcam
Cambridge University computer lab deployed the first webcam,
primarily to monitor a certain coffee maker and avoid wasted trips to an empty
pot.
First Banner Ad
The very first banner ad seen in the Internet was in 1994.
This ad was part of At&Ts “you will” campaign, and was positioned on
HotWired homepage.
Internet File Sharing
In 1991, the MP3 standard was invented. But it was only in
1998 that the first music file-sharing service went live and changed the way
the Internet was used forever.
File sharing has been a problem for the authorities that
managed it ever since the birth of the Internet. McGill University shut down
their FTP indexing site in 1989 after knowing that it was responsible for half
of the Internet traffic from America into Canada. Today, there are already
several file indexing sites made.
