The 3 Main Types Of Household Boilers

trusted advisors and installers of energy-efficient heating systems
Domestic or household boilers heat water which can be used to supply a central heating system, hot water for taps, or both. These water heating systems are usually fuelled by mains gas and other types of alternative fuel such liquid petroleum gas or LPG, coal, and electricity.

There are 3 basic types of domestic boilers. These are:

1. Regular boilers. Also known as conventional, traditional, or heat-only boilers, they are ideal for homes that already have a traditional heating and hot water system which is linked to a detached hot water cylinder. Regular boilers also require a cold water storage tank in the loft to feed the hot water cylinder and a tank that maintains the water level of the central heating system.

2. System boilers. This type of boiler requires a cylinder for storing hot water. However the major heating and hot water system components are built into the boiler itself. As such, it is a boiler that is easy and quick to install. With a system boiler, you do not need a tank in the loft. It is therefore a great option for homes with little or no loft space. System boilers are also compatible with solar water heating system for those looking for boilers that are more eco-friendly and cost-efficient.

3. Combi boilers. Combination or “combi” boilers are both a high efficiency water heater and a central heating boiler in a single compact unit. They heat water directly from the mains when you turn on a tap. It therefore does not require a hot water storage cylinder or a cold water storage tank.
