Trees are living and breathing large organisms. As such, they require nutrients and care if you want to them to stay healthy and beautiful. And just like other living organisms, if they become unhealthy, they will be prone to certain diseases.

Below are some of the most common types of tree diseases:

Root and Butt Rot disease

Armillaria, Hypoxylon deustum, and black root rot are three of the most common types of root and butt rot disease that can infect hardwood trees at their roots and butt- the base of the tree’s trunk at ground level. They appear as black, leathery fungus, much like the viral Serpula himantioides fungus, and spread up the tree’s trunk from the ground. Mushrooms can also appear and grow in the soil at the base of the tree. This disease can decay the root of stressed trees.

Canker disease

This type of disease comes in three common forms: Cytospora, Nectria, and Phomopsis. They look like canker sores on a tree’s bark or branch, hence its name. This disease usually infects pine, poplar, spruce, willow, maple, oak, juniper, and Douglas fir trees, among others. The usual cause of this disease is an open wound on the tree’s branches or bark that has become infected with a specific type of bacteria or fungus.

Powdery Mildew disease

This disease comes in the form of a white or gray powdery growth that looks like talcum powder on the leaves. A particular type of fungi under the Erysiphale classification causes this tree mildew disease. This disease can infect attack nearly all types of vegetation in the right conditions but it is a particular problem among unhealthy linden, crabapple, catalpa, and chokeberry trees.
