Ants are one of the most common types of pests that can be found around the world. Some species are harmless; others can be dangerous to both humans and animals and they can wreak havoc to infrastructures, causing people to lose a fortune in damages.

In Canada, below are the common species of ants you can find in this country:

Carpenter ants
– This type of ant is the largest of all ant species and is easily recognizable for its size. Worker carpenter ant can reach up to 1.3 cm and are usually black in color. However, slight variations in species may make some ants appear more brown or red. Carpenter ants like to create nests by burrowing into wood. Their diet is primarily sugar based; as such, they are easily attracted to foods with high sugar content.

Pavement ants - Ants of this specie can range from about 4 to 10 mm long. Pavement arts have dark-coloured bodies and have light brown legs. They are also easily attracted to sweet foods.

Pharaoh ants
– These ants are typically small, measuring only 1.5 to 2 mm in length. They are golden red in colour. Their species originated in the tropics and hence, are unable to withstand the harsh Canadian winters. However, they usually appear during the warmer months. Pharaoh ants typically burrow near water and food sources. In addition, they are easily attracted to meat and grease and as such, they are often found in or near kitchens.
