The average employee spends 28% of a regular 40-hour work week reading and responding to emails. This means that the average employee spends about 650 hours a year reacting to mostly non-urgent and extraneous messages that can distract them from the kind of work that should move an organisation forward.

It takes approximately 64 seconds for an employee to recover from reading an email. The fact that employees spend 28% of their time reading and responding to email is bad enough but what’s worse is how long it takes for them to recover from it. A case study conducted showed that it takes an average of 64 seconds to recover from an email interruption and return back to work, irrespective of the email’s significance.

Less than half of all emails received by an employee are important, relevant or useful for them.
In another study, it was found out that only 42% of emails in the average employee’s inbox are important, useful, informative or relevant. As such, there is no urgent need for an employee to check his or her inbox every minute or so.
