One of the most common procedures performed in cosmetic
dentistry are fitting implants. Implants can be very costly due to the
extensive procedure it requires. It is also a more or less permanent solution
for replacement of missing teeth. When implants are not availed
of, some people may look at bridges or dentures as alternative. Implants require
a surgical procedure where the surgeon will fix the implants into the jawbone.
There are three parts to an implant: a titanium metal, an
abutment, and the crown. The first part is the one which is fused to the
jawbone. The second part is fitted over that section of the implant which
protrudes from the gums. The third part is that which is created by a
restorative dentist in order to achieve a more natural and tooth-like look.
An implant can be sought to replace a tooth. It can also be
sought to provide support in case several teeth are being replaced. The
procedure gets even more complicated if the patient has experienced bone loss
due to some recurring disease or loss of teeth because, in such case, the
surgeon will usually have to graft bone in order to create something where the
implant can be secured to. In any case, the cosmetic dentist will have to
apprise the patient of the procedure in order for the patient to be aware of
what will be performed on his or her teeth.
