Pneumatic tools are devices which are operated with pressurized air or gas. It is also known as air tools. The concept behind these tools has its origin in ancient times. It was Hero of Alexandria, a Greek mathematician who gave birth to pneumatic tools during the 1st century AD. There are actually pieces of evidence of his inventions powered by wind and steam. But then such ideas were not explored fully.
Different Pneumatic Tools
Compressor/Air Pump – Otto von Guericke, a German physicist and engineer, invented the compressor or air pump. This device sucked out gas or air from the vessel it was attached to.
Pneumatic Hammer – In 1890, Charles Brady King invented the pneumatic hammer. It was used for fastening steel structures in railway sleepers and shipyards. This is one of the 2 exhibitions Charles made at the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893.
Pneumatic Drill – This is powered by compressed air used to break up pavement or to drill rock. It not clear who exactly invented it. There are some sources pointing to Samuel Ingersoll in 1871.
Pneumatic Pipe/Tube – It was in 1867 that application of pneumatic tubes was elaborated when Alfred Beach invented the pneumatic subway line. He demonstrated that the pipe can transport passengers. Nowadays, pneumatic tubes are used at bank terminals in order to facilitate transactions at drive-throughs.
