How Mobile Application Development Came About

Mobile application development is defined as the process of software creation for mobile devices. Basically, this is a computer generated program that runs on smart phones and other mobile devices.

Brief History And Its Evolution

On April 3, 1973, the first mobile phone was made publicly by Martin Cooper of Motorola. It weighed 1.1 kg and has a dimension of 23x12x4.45 cm.

The first smartphone with applications, on the other hand, was introduced by IBM Simon. It featured an address book, calendar, notepad, clock, email, calculator, and a touchscreen with a QWERTY keyboard.

In the early 90s, Psion EPOC introduced the first mobile application for a PDA. After which, EPOC became the backbone of Symbian operating system. It is also during this time that the first SMS application was introduced. Hence, SMS communication became a trend in younger generations and across all the ages. Digital Cellular Network System 2G was already in operation.

In 1998, the very first downloadable media content of mobile phones was sold as ringtones. It was launched by Findland’s Radiolinja – known today as Elisa.

In 1999, NTT DoCoMo integrated Internet with mobile phones in Japan.

And because there is an increase in user demands, different mobile phone manufacturers began providing more apps through Internet by using WAP technology. And since WAP was a bit complex, there are manufacturers that started using platforms such as Linux and Windows for their app development requirements. It is actually from here that developing an app became simpler.

Still, most App users are not yet satisfied with what apps they have. Hence, Apple released its first iPhone and App Store in 2007-2008. The man behind this was Steve Jobs.
