What Are Pressure Vessels?

trusted steel fabrication company in the UAE
Pressure vessels are staples in oil and gas platforms, large construction, manufacturing, and industrial areas. They are huge in size that they can easily be mistaken for water tanks by undiscerning folks.

But what exactly are pressure vessels? These are types of units that are used to store and transmit liquids, gases, and vapours under pressure. The pressures of the load will exert pressure equally in all directions on the walls and ends of the vessel. Because of this, the cylinder walls of the pressure vessel often contain stresses in certain sections. In engineering, pressure vessels usually come in the form of cylindrical or spherical tanks and are used to store various types of fluid under pressure.

Classifications

Pressure vessels are divided into two types, according to their dimensions and end construction.

In terms of dimensions, pressure vessels may be made of thin or thick shell. This is usually determined by the vessel’s wall thickness and shell diameter. Pressure vessels with thin shells are usually used in boilers, tanks, and pipes while those with thick shells are used in high-pressure cylinders and tank gun barrels.

In terms of end construction, a pressure vessel can have an open or closed end. A cylinder with a piston is an example of an open-end pressure vessel while a tank is a closed-end one. Because of the fluid pressure, hoop or circumferential stresses can be found in open-ended vessels. Closed-end vessels, on the other hand, contain both circumferential and longitudinal stresses.
